Mission

To provide immediate access to safe, affordable, Montessori-Inspired, trauma-informed childcare to support the families in our Community and at the MICAH House.

History

In the Summer of 2024, MICAH House opened the Florence M. Lakin Child Development Center, which provides families immediate access to trauma-informed childcare for MICAH House families experiencing homelessness. Serving children ages 6 weeks to 6 years, the center is reserved for MICAH House children first, and secondly to community members.

Families who have stayed at MICAH House, can continue to keep their children enrolled in the Florence M. Lakin Child Development Center to keep routine, consistency and progress.

Curriculum

We use a combined curriculum of the Montessori philosophy with a strong focus on Trauma Informed Care and Practices. The Montessori philosophy focuses on educating the whole child in all areas of life through hands-on, child-led, sensory-based activities. Using the Montessori method of education provides us the space to include trauma informed practices like providing a consistent daily routine, choice-based curriculum that gives the child a sense of empowerment and agency.
